Husnitdin Umaraliev was imprisoned in relation to his religious belief and activity. 

In July 1999, authorities arrested Umaraliev when he filed a report with the military prosecutor's office about the murder of his brother, Umaraliev Khasanboy Erkinovich. Authorities charged him with “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC) and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC after accusing him of “religious extremism."

On July 5, 1999, the Fergana Region Court sentenced Umaraliev to 17 years in prison.
