In June 2014, public security officials in the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) arrested Tenzin, a tour guide and regarded by Tibetan Buddhists as a reincarnated Buddhist teacher (trulku), reportedly for encouraging Tibetans to support the Dalai Lama's position in a religious dispute over a "deity" or "spirit" known as Shugden.
In December 2014, a court sentenced Tenzin to 10 years in prison for “misleading” locals (about Shugden) and supporting “the Dalai clique.”

On July 1, 2021, police in Aba (Ngaba) county, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province, detained Trinle, a monk, reportedly for sharing the Dalai Lama's teachings and writings on the Dalai Lama with other Tibetans.
In September 2021, Trinle's family had received word that he had been sentenced to five years in prison.
