In or around May 2018, state security officials in Urumqi municipality, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Hajim, a restauranteur, and others reportedly in relation to a now-closed charitable fund founded by Hajim's brother to support education abroad for Uyghurs. Hajim's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR.
