Asif Pervaiz is imprisoned and sentenced to death for blasphemy.
In early October 2013, Pervaiz, a garment factory worker, was accused by a work colleague of sending blasphemous text messages. On October 10, 2013, authorities arrested Pervaiz. The original police report filed against him reportedly accused him of "intending to outrage religious feelings" (Sec. 295-A PPC), "desecrating the Qur'an" (Sec. 295-B PPC), and "insulting the Prophet Muhammad" (Sec. 295-C PPC).
On September 8, 2020, Pervaiz was sentenced to death and fined 50,000 rupees. Based on the court order as seen by Reuters, he would first serve three years in prison for "misusing" his phone in relation to the incident and then be executed. Pervaiz's lawyer has said that the ruling would be appealed.
Pervaiz is reportedly a father of four.
