Cao Genxiu is imprisoned for her religious belief and activity. 

On April 16, 2018, police in Nanchang County, Nanchang Municipality, Jiangxi Province, detained Cao and five other Falun Gong adherents as they were studying Falun Gong at one of their homes. 

In October 2019, the Xihu District People’s Court in Nanchang sentenced Cao to seven years in prison.

Cao is reportedly being held at Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison.
