Cao Jutao is imprisoned for her religious belief and activity.

On September 25, 2018, plainclothes officers from the Duchang County National Security Brigade detained Cao in relation to her religious beliefs. Police reportedly confiscated religious materials from her residence. There are reports that Cao was physically assaulted while detained.

On an unspecified date in 2019, the Duchang County People’s Court reportedly sentenced Cao to six years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).

In September 2019, Cao was transferred to Jiangxi Women’s Prison.

Prior to entering prison, Cao suffered from several health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
