Eduard Sharlot is detained for blasphemy.
On November 22, 2023, authorities detained Sharlot, a musician, at Pulkovo Airport and placed him under administrative arrest. Sharlot's arrest came after he posted videos on social media of himself burning his Russian passport, condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and nailing his military ID and a photograph of Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church to a crucifix.
On December 2, 2023, Sharlot was transferred to Samara and sent to a pre-trial detention center on charges of "rehabilitation of Nazism" (Art. 354.1-4 RCC) and "insulting the religious feelings of believers" (Art. 148 RCC). Sharlot was later charged with damaging an official document out of personal interest (Art. 325-1 RCC).
In May 2024, it was reported that prosecutors had also charged Sharlot with “inciting hatred or enmity, as well as humiliating the dignity of a person or a group of persons” (Art. 282-2 RCC).
