Elijan Mamut is detained for his ethnoreligious identity.
In May 2017, authorities detained Mamut, a businessman, reportedly for his trips abroad and his money transfers to his daughters who were studying abroad. Despite letters from his children demanding information about his case and whereabouts, authorities have failed to respond. Abdurahman's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
In October 2019, it was believed that Mamut was serving in a labor camp.
As of September 2021, Mamut is reportedly being held in a detention center in Kashgar, Shufu county, living in inhumane living conditions.
