Emetjan is imprisoned for his ethnoreligious identity and in relation to his religiously oriented business.
In 2018, authorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained Emetjan possibly in relation to his ownership of a halal goods trading company in Urumqi. Emetjan's detention coincided with the arrests of several relatives, including Ablimit Hoshur Hajim, reportedly in relation to a now-closed charitable fund founded by Hajim to support education abroad for Uyghurs. Emetjan's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR in 2017 and 2018.
On an unspecified date, Emetjan was reportedly sentenced to 15 years in prison.
