Erdenetuya was imprisoned for her religious belief and activity.
On May 17, 2018, police officers from the Tamusu Border Police Station detained Erdenetuya in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, reportedly in relation to her religious beliefs, religious leadership role, and organizing of worship meetings.
On April 19, 2019, the Alxa Right Banner People’s Court sentenced Erdenetuya to five years and six months in prison and fined her 20,000 yuan for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Erdenetuya's sentence should have ended in November 2023.
