Gao Shengzhi was imprisoned for his religious belief and activity.
On July 14, 2015, police from the Taixing Public Security Bureau detained Gao after he came out of a church gathering place. Gao was reportedly tortured while detained.
On June 3, 2016, Gao was sentenced to seven years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Gao is believed to be serving his sentence at Hongzehu Prison in Jiangsu.
Gao's sentence should have ended in July 2022.
