Gedun Lhundrub is detained in relation to criticism of religious freedom conditions.
On December 2, 2020, police in Rebgong (Tongren) county, Malho (Huangnan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai province, detained Lhundrub, a writer and monk, at Rebgong’s Rongwo Monastery, reportedly while he was on his way to attend a religious debate in Rebgong. Authorities targeted Lhundrub reportedly after he questioned Chinese policies regarding the sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism at a Rebgong-area workshop.
In May 2022, it was reported that Lhundrub was being held at a detention facility in Xining municipality, Qinghai. Officials had reportedly prohibited his family from visiting him and were forcing him to translate Tibetan Buddhist texts into Mandarin.
