Gheni Haji is imprisoned for his religious belief, activity, and ethnoreligious identity.
In May 2017, authorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained Haji and several Uyghur businessmen for allegedly displaying signs of "religious extremism." A local security official reportedly said that the men "had also undertaken 'unapproved, private hajj' pilgrimages and had been involved with imams who were not sanctioned by the state" and that Haji specifically "prayed only eight times at prayer service," which was "a sign of extremism."
On an unspecified day in 2017, Haji was sentenced to eight years in prison on unknown charges.
