On October 23, 2018, authorities detained Gong in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). Reports suggest that authorities targeted her because she attended worship sessions and offered her residence as a church meeting place.

On September 4, 2019, the Kuitun City People’s Court sentenced Gong to six years in prison and fined her 30,000 yuan on charges of "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
