In March 2019, authorities arrested Gong after summoning him to a police station. Authorities reportedly seized Falun Gong-related materials, electronics, and cash from his home.

In October 2020, Gong was sentenced to four years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).

Gong's sentence should have ended in March 2023.
