On August 5, 2024, the authorities arrested Tórrez, parish priest of the Santa María de Guadalupe parish in Matagalpa and rector of the San Luis Gonzaga Philosophy Seminary. Tórrez's arrest comes amid a crackdown on the Catholic Church in Nicaragua.
On August 7, 2024, the Nicaraguan government exiled Tórrez to the Vatican.
