Hawa Musayim was imprisoned for his religious and ethnic identity.
In 2017, public security officials in Kashgar Konasheher (Shufu) County, Kashgar (Kashi) Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Hawa Musayim and her husband, Urayim Axun, and accused them of for "religious extremism" reportedly in relation to Musayim's wearing of long clothing and a headscarf, which are expressions of Uyghur Muslims’ cultural identity. Musayim's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in 2017.
On an unspecified date, Musayim was reportedly sentenced to six years in prison on unknown charges.
Musayim's sentence should have ended.
