Hemitjan Hajim is detained for his ethnoreligious identity.
In or around May 2018, state security officials in Urumqi municipality, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Hajim and others reportedly in relation to a now-closed charitable fund founded by the brother of Hajim's business partner to support education abroad for Uyghurs. Hajim's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR.
