On August 2, 2017, officers from the Tianjin Public Security Bureau detained Hou reportedly in relation to her religious beliefs and alleged religious leadership role in Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Henan, and other areas.
On September 17, 2018, the Jizhou People’s Court sentenced Hou to seven years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
