Hu Mei was imprisoned for her religious belief and activity.
In May 2016, officers from the Xuzhou Economic Development Zone Public Security Bureau detained Hu reportedly in relation to her religious leadership role and efforts to organize gatherings and evangelizing activities.
In June 2017, Xuzhou Economic Development Zone People’s Court sentenced Hu to five years in prison and fined her 20,000 yuan for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Hu's sentence should have ended in May 2021.
