Ma Like is detained for criticizing religious freedom conditions.
In April 2017, authorities in Kashgar prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), detained Ma reportedly for “advocating terrorism or extremism and inciting implementation of terrorist activities.” Later that month, Ma was indicted for "advocating extremism." In 2014, Ma had reported messages on Weibo critical of government policies in the XUAR, as well as messages supporting women’s right to choose whether or not to wear Muslim head coverings. He also opposed the demolition of his hostel during demolitions of the old city of Kashgar. Ma's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR.
