Memet'eli Atawulla is detained for his ethnoreligious identity.
In August 2017, authorities detained Atawulla and held him at a "political reeducation" center months after his brother, Rozimemet Atawulla, was detained for "religious extremism" and sent to the same center. Their detentions were reportedly part of a wave of detentions of Uyghurs in Hotan County in 2017 and 2018.
Atawulla was reportedly hospitalized at some point due to detention conditions.
Other members of Atawulla's family, including his mother, and brother-in-law, have also been subjected to detention.
