On April 14, 2008, Ghulja county police detained 12 Uyghur men, including Seyitakhun, reportedly for teaching religion to children.

On March 24, 2009, the Ili Intermediate People's Court sentenced Seyitakhun to life in prison for “splitting the state” (Art. 103 CCL).
