Renagul Gheni is imprisoned for her ethnoreligious identity and religious activity.
In 2018, authorities in Cherchen (Qiemo) county, Bayangol (Bayinguoleng) Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) detained Gheni, an elementary school art teacher and painter, reportedly in relation to prayers she offered at her father's funeral and for possessing a Qur'an. Gheni's arrest came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in XUAR.
On an unspecified date, Gheni was reportedly sentenced to 17 years in prison on unspecified charges.
