On March 27, 2000, a Surkhandaryo Region Court sentenced Boymatov to nine years in prison for “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC) and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC.
On August 15, 2008, the Navoi Region Court reportedly sentenced him to another 16 years and three months in prison for "organizing a criminal group" (Art. 242 UCC), “attempts to overthrow the constitutional order” (Art. 159 UCC) and an unspecified subsection of Article 244 UCC. According to human rights defenders and relatives, the court also applied Article 34 UCC to declare him a “recidivist” and thus lengthen his term of imprisonment.
