In 2017, authorities detained Tursun and accused him of for "religious extremism" reportedly in relation to his ex-wife wearing torn clothing, an expression of Uyghur Muslims’ cultural identity. Tursan's detention came amid mass detentions of largely Muslim ethnic minorities in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in 2017.
