On July 13, 2021, public security officials in Serthar (Seda) county, Kardze (Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province, detained four Tibetans, including Kyi, at a restaurant after police searched their phones. It is reported that authorities had been searching the phones of local residents for images of the Dalai Lama around the time of his birthday.
