On June 15, 2018, officers from the Public Security Bureau of Bengbu city, Anhui province, detained Yang reportedly in relation to her religious belief.
On December 3, 2019, the Huaishang District People’s Court of Bengbu City sentenced Yang to five years and six months in prison and fined her 10,000 yuan for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
Yang's sentence should have ended in December 2023.
