On October 31, 2017, authorities detained Zhang in Hubei province reportedly in relation to her religious activity.
On May 25, 2020, Zhang was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).
