Zhao Yuelian was imprisoned for her religious belief and activity.

On April 22, 2015, officers from the Taiyuan Public Security Bureau arrested Zhao reportedly in relation to her efforts to print religious materials. 

On March 10, 2016, the Yingze District People’s Court of Taiyuan City sentenced Zhao to six years in prison for "organizing or using a cult to undermine implementation of the law" (Art. 300 CCL).

Zhao's sentence should have ended in April 2021.
